What To Eat
It’s hard to go wrong eating in San Diego! If you’re interested in foraging, local sourcing and far out flavors, Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub is worth a look for sushi and sashimi you can’t get anywhere else. Whisknladle brings from scratch cooking with a more casual presentation. If Mexican is more your style, consider Galaxy Taco. And if you’re on a budget, don’t miss Salud!, a former food truck serving up delicious tacos and street corn.
I’m always in the market for the best ice cream around, and for that, you’ll want to head to Salt & Straw (out of this world flavor combinations), JoJo’s Creamery (amazing gluten-free and vegan options and homemade sauces) or Mariposa Ice Cream (traditional family place with dairy-free options).

Well, you’ve got the important stuff covered already – where to stay, and what to eat! But you’ll probably want to do something else while you’re in San Diego too, I imagine. Here are the highlights you won’t want to miss.
Balboa Park
This is really a must-visit while you’re here. It’s San Diego’s version of Central Park, and whether you head to the museums or decide to hike the free trails, there is a lot to do and see. The trails criss-cross the park and there’s even a cactus garden, so it’s a great escape from the city.
Visit The Beach
San Diego is full of free, gorgeous, irresistible beaches you won’t want to miss. With 70 miles of coastline, there’s a beach for everyone. Coronado Beach is a great choice, with easy street parking relatively close by and a gorgeous historic hotel, and Windansea Beach may make you think you’re visiting an island oasis. Pacific Beach is the nightlife capital, especially for the younger college set and those who like to mingle with them.
Visit A Farmer’s Market
Make like a local and get yourself some fresh produce while you’re here! Ocean Beach hosts a fun one on Wednesday afternoons, but just do a quick search or ask a local and you’ll realize you’ve got lots of options nearby.
San Diego Zoo and Safari Park
This is one of the most famous zoos in the country, with one of the largest collections of rare and endangered animals. Plan a full day, as this visit will set you back $52 for adults. Bring your energy, and consider the bus tour if your feet get weary. You’ll find the zoo in the northwest corner of Balboa Park.
Didn’t get enough of an animal fix? The Safari Park is 32 miles north of here. You’ll need to drive there, but parking is free.
